Graham Spiers delivers verdict on Everton defender Nathan Patterson

The international break is almost over and Everton players can now fully focus on helping the club avoid relegation.

Jordan Pickford started in both games for England but made costly mistakes against Belgium on Tuesday night. Likewise, Nathan Patterson was involved in Scotland’s friendly game against Nothern Ireland which they lost 1-0 at Hampden Park.

The situation of Patterson is really frustrating. The 22-year-old is a highly talented defender but has struggled for games under Sean Dyche this season. He has managed only nine league starts under Dyche and looked rusty while playing for Scotland.

It was his mistake at the back that allowed Conor Bradley to score from distance. Popular broadcaster Graham Spiers reacted to the footage of the goal, adding it is “utterly painful” to watch Patterson. The former Rangers defender is a “terrific” young player but he is lacking confidence at the moment.

Everton defender Nathan Patterson lacking confidence

Patterson is a fantastic defender who has struggled to make an impact since joining from Rangers, signed by former Toffees boss, Rafa Benitez.

Usually, he is very strong at the back while equally good going forward. However, Dyche probably wants to see better defensive effort from him, while his positioning sense has been criticised at times.

He needs to work really hard to impress his manager. The quality is there but probably he is not doing enough to win back the confidence of his manager. He is still very young, and as Spiers pointed out, the Scottish defender is lacking confidence at the moment.

Patterson is a naturally attacking full-back whose pace and dynamism are his biggest assets and yet he doesn’t get enough goals and assists. Ben Godfrey, on the other hand, brings solidity at the back, and that’s why Dyche has stuck with him, even though he is a natural centre-back.
