Jarell Quansah reveals Ibrahima Konate has had a huge influence on him in Liverpool training sessions

Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah has found himself playing more games than he expected this term having thought he was going on another loan spell.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan with League One club Bristol Rovers, featuring in 16 games across all competitions, and he impressed Reds manager Jurgen Klopp during pre-season, with the German insisting the club did not need to sign another centre-back during the last summer transfer window.

Quansah made his competitive Liverpool debut by replacing an injured Joel Matip in the closing stages against Newcastle United just three games into the 2023-24 Premier League campaign and has since featured in 23 games across all competitions.

The youngster has been learning from Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Matip and Joe Gomez in training, and he claims the Frenchman has impressed him with some of his defensive abilities and traits.

“Virg talks you through the game when you’re in it,” Quansah told The Athletic.

“Before the game, he’s telling you about opposition strikers and what to expect: what their strengths are, what they tend to do in certain situations. As captain of the team, he sets the standards.

“All of the other centre-backs have helped me in different ways. Ibou’s (Konate) one-v-one defending is so special. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. The same with Joel, with the way he steps in and drives forward with the ball, how he breaks lines and picks the right pass. It’s just a great learning experience for me.”

Quansah and other Liverpool academy graduates have played key roles as the Anfield club look to win all the major trophies they are challenging for this term, with the Carabao Cup already in the bag.

They have all but booked a place in the quarter-final of the Europa League after winning 5-1 against Sparta Prague in the first-leg of the round of 16 away from home.

Liverpool are only second in the Premier League table with ten games remaining due to an inferior goal difference to Arsenal and are facing Manchester United in the quarter-final of the FA Cup on Sunday.

Quansah has been a key player in his debut season despite his little experience and could end up becoming a quadruple winner in the coming days if all goes to plan.
