Keith Jackson predicts score of Rangers clash v Benfica

Rangers will face Benfica away from Ibrox in the Europa League on Thursday night (7 March).

The Gers are leading the Scottish Premiership by two points over Celtic and they would love to progress further in the Europa League as well.

Under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, the Bears reached the final of the Europa League, and there’s no reason why they can’t repeat similar heroics this time as well.

The likes of Liverpool, West Ham, Brighton and Bayer Leverkusen are among the favourites to win this competition, but Rangers must believe they can beat any side on their day.

Benfica are second in the Portuguese Liga but they are heading into this side on the back of two defeats in a row, including the massive 5-0 defeat against Porto. Rangers should feel they can score goals away from home.

Keith Jackson, writing for the Daily Record, says that the Portuguese giants will be under “serious pressure” from their own fans. He thinks that it’s highly possible that Clement can earn a draw and then grab a win at Ibrox in the next leg.

Rangers need to bounce back

The Daily Record journalist has predicted a 2-2 draw (printed edition, page 48) for this game. He wrote:

“Rangers would have had their work cut out in Lisbon with a full-strength side but Philippe Clement’s hand has been weakened by the loss of so many of his most creative attacking options.

“But Benfica have been blowing more cold than hot lately and will be under serious pressure from their own fans.

“It might not be beyond the Belgian boss to nick a draw away from home and take the tie back to Ibrox still in the balance.”

The Bears have been superb under Clement in 2024 and they did an incredible job to come from behind and take a two-point lead at the top.

The suffered their first defeat after 11 games when they lost 2-1 against Motherwell at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership. Luckily for them, Celtic failed to capitalise on it and lost 2-0 against Hearts.

Clement is missing some of his key players but the players should be motivated for this game. If Rangers can win and get a draw, it would represent a brilliant result for the Ibrox outfit.
