Manchester City will welcome FC Copenhagen at the Etihad Stadium in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday night.

Manchester City will welcome FC Copenhagen at the Etihad Stadium in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday night.

Having won their first-ever Champions League title last term, the Citizens are the favourite to win this competition this season as well. They have displayed impressive performances in the Champions League so far this term, topping their group.

Man City enjoyed a 3-1 victory in the first leg against Copenhagen so they have almost secured their place in the quarter-final. Pep Guardiola’s side are almost unbeatable at home so it doesn’t look likely the Danish side will be able to do the unthinkable in this fixture.

The Citizens will be coming into this game off the back of a comfortable 3-1 victory over the City rival Manchester United. Guardiola’s side found themselves trailing early on in the game courtesy of Marcus Rashford’s emphatic long-range strike.

Man City looked wobbly at that stage of the game and gave up a few chances for the Red Devils to extend the margin. But, Rashford couldn’t take advantage of those opportunities.

However, the Citizens completely dominated the second half and Phil Foden helped his side turn the game around by scoring twice before Erling Haaland’s late strike. So, following that victory, Man City will be coming into Wednesday’s game full of confidence.

On the other hand, Copenhagen have had a mixed campaign so far, sitting third in their league at the moment. They endured a disappointing defeat against Midtjylland last weekend so they might lack confidence ahead of the game against Man City.

Team news

Man City don’t have many injury problems ahead of this fixture but Jack Grealish is set to be unavailable for selection in this fixture due to an injury issue.

Josko Gvardiol was struggling with an injury over the last few weeks but he was among the matchday squad against Man Utd last weekend. So, he is fit enough to feature in this game.

As for Copenhagen, they will be without Lukas Lerager, Theo Sander, Davit Khocholava and Viktor Claesson due to their respective injury problems. In addition, Emil Hojlund, the brother of Man Utd striker Rasmus Hojlund, is in doubt ahead of this fixture.

Predicted line-up

Guardiola is likely to go with his preferred 3-2-4-1 formation but it is always difficult to predict who will be in Guardiola’s starting eleven, however, it is guaranteed that Ederson is set to be between the sticks.

Kyle Walker could be deployed on the right side of defence, while Nathan Ake is likely to be on the opposition side. Ruben Dias might commence at the heart of Man City’s backline.

Rodrigo Hernandez is set to be in the deep-lying playmaker position and alongside the Spaniard, John Stones might commence.

Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne could be in the number ten position, while Bernardo Silva and Jeremy Doku should be on the flanks. Erling Haaland will lead the line for the hosts.

Expected Man City line-up vs FC Copenhagen

Ederson; Walker, Dias, Ake; Rodri, Stones; Silva, De Bruyne, Foden, Doku; Haaland

As for Copenhagen, Jacob Neestrup could field his side in the 4-3-3 system with Kamil Grabara set to be between the sticks. In front of the Polish goalkeeper, Elias Jelert, Denis Vavro, Scott McKenna and Kevin Diks should be the back four for the visitors.

Diogo Goncalves, Rasmus Falk Jensen and Magnus Mattsson – who scored the goal in the first leg – should be the midfield trio for the Danish side, while Viktor Claesson, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Elias Achouri should be the front three for Neestrup’s side.

Expected Copenhagen line-up vs Man City

Grabara; Jelert, Vavro, McKenna, Diks; Goncalves, Jensen, Mattsson; Elyounoussi, Claesson, Achouri

Key players

Haaland has established himself as a talismanic figure for Man City having joined the club ahead of last season. He missed a glorious chance in the last game but eventually managed to put his name on the score-sheet. So, the Norwegian will be hoping to continue his goal-scoring form in this game as well.

Foden has been in tremendous form this season, scoring 18 goals and registering 10 assists in 37 appearances in all competitions. So, the onus will be on him to guide his team to victory in this game by putting his name on the score-sheet and creating chances for fellow attackers.

Foden has managed to fill the void of Kevin De Bruyne this campaign. The Belgian has struggled with injury problems but after returning to full fitness, he hasn’t been able to showcase his best yet, though he produced four assists in a recent FA Cup encounter against Luton Town – where Haaland scored five goal in that fixture. However, the midfielder will be keen on returning to his very best in midweek.

Rodri is the driving force of Man City’s recent success. The midfielder has been extremely consistent over the last few years and it’s highly likely that he will be able to produce his best in this encounter as well if he starts

For Copenhagen, Man City haven’t been watertight in defence this season and have given up chances in almost every game. So, the Danish side’s front three will have to be clinical in front of the goal to give them a glimmer of hope to win this fixture.

Guardiola’s side are expected to dominate the game with possession so Copenhagen will have to defend with their full squad. If they can’t keep their concentration for the full 90 minutes then the hosts will tear them apart.

Copenhagen’s backline will have to display a flawless performance to keep the Man City attack at bay, while the goalkeeper, Grabara will have to be at the top of his game to repel the opposition attack. However, it is going to be extremely difficult for them to keep a clean-sheet at the Etihad Stadium, considering the quality that Man City possess in their attacking department.

Man City have established themselves as one of the best clubs in the world under Guardiola’s guidance so they are always the favourite to win games and it’s nothing different for this encounter either.

Although Copenhagen managed to secure their place from a pretty tough group, containing Man Utd, it was always difficult for them to get past Man City’s challenge over the two legs.

They endured a 3-1 defeat in the first leg and the scoreline could be even bigger than that in this fixture. Copenhagen could look to sit deep to contain the hosts’ attack but it is going to be extremely difficult for them to come away with anything from this encounter. Man City 5-1 Copenhagen
