Pep Guardiola blown away by Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes

Newcastle United will travel to Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday (16 March).

The Magpies are heading into this game on the back of a 3-2 defeat against Chelsea, but they will look to get a win here and give themselves a chance to win a trophy.

Newcastle have been very disappointing this season, and they could miss out on a European spot unless their form improves drastically. While there are suggestions that Eddie Howe could be replaced in the summer, he retains the backing of the Magpies board.

The Magpies have badly struggled with injuries this season, and very few players have managed to hit consistency. One player who has been brilliant once again is Bruno Guimaraes and he has received huge praise from none other than Pep Guardiola himself.

The Manchester City boss has hailed the Brazil midfielder as an “exceptional” holding midfielder ahead of their FA Cup clash.

“An exceptional holding midfielder. Aggressive with the ball. Set-pieces are aggressive. A real complete holding midfielder since he was playing with Lyon,” said Guardiola.

Newcastle need another Bruno Guimaraes strong performance

The 26-year-old midfielder has managed three goals and five assists in 27 Premier League games this season. He is arguably one of the best holding midfielders in the league, and Guardiola looks like one of his big fans.

The Magpies should look to prioritise winning the FA Cup this season, and they must produce a strong performance away at Etihad.

Apart from injuries, what has been really frustrating for Newcastle is that they haven’t been able to maintain any consistency. They were superb in the 3-0 win over Wolves but lost against Chelsea in the next game.

However, the charm of the cup games is that it is unpredictable. The Magpies have missed so many players this season through injuries and Howe has confirmed today that Sean Longstaff has been playing through pain barrier in recent weeks.
