Willy Gnonto raves about Georginio Rutter after Leeds United win v Sheffield Wednesday

Leeds United moved to second in the Championship after they won 2-0 against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Friday night (8 March).

The Whites have now picked up 11 wins and a draw from 12 Championship games in 2024, and they are looking unbeatable at the moment.

Daniel Farke’s side have closed the gap at the top to just two points with Leicester, although the Foxes have a game in hand. Ipswich Town are just one point behind Leeds and they have played a game less as well.

Patrick Bamford put the Whites ahead just before half-time as he tapped in from close range from Junior Firpo’s fine left-wing delivery. In the second half, Wilfried Gnonto scored a fabulous goal after a brilliant free-flowing move, involving Georginio Rutter.

Rutter, 21, has now managed 14 assists for the Whites in all competitions this season, and Gnonto praised him as a “quality” player after the game.

“I know the ball was going to come because he [Rutter] has the quality and he saw before so I was just running and focussing on the first touch and then of course the finish,” said Gnonto after the game.

Leeds United march on

It wasn’t a great performance from the Whites but what really matters is that they have managed to pick up all three points.

During the summer, there were a lot of speculations surrounding the futures of Rutter and Gnonto, but Farke decided to keep both. Gnonto, 20, has managed six goals in the Championship and has registered two assists as well.

Rutter has been simply sensational for the Whites. He has managed six goals and 13 assists in the Championship this season and has played a pivotal role under Farkke.

Another player who deserves a mention in the same breath is Patrick Bamford. The England striker struggled with injuries in the past 18 months or so, but he has returned strongly with seven goals in nine starts in the Championship this season.

Leeds will get nine days to rest properly before they take on Millwall followed by an international break. So, the players will get more time to recover. It will be an ideal time to get the injured players back and get them into proper shape.
